How AI Search Is Changing Website Traffic

by

And What Website Owners Need to Do About It

Something quietly shifted in how people find information online. It didn’t happen overnight, but at some point, millions of users stopped clicking through to websites and started getting their answers directly from an AI. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and a growing list of AI-powered search tools now sit between the user and your website, answering questions before a visitor ever lands on your page.

For website owners, bloggers, domain investors, and digital publishers, this isn’t a minor trend to monitor. It’s a structural change in how web traffic is generated, and it’s already showing up in analytics dashboards around the world.

Here’s what’s actually happening, why it matters, and how to position your site for the new reality.

The Rise of Zero-Click Search

Traditional search worked on a simple principle: a user types a query, scans a list of blue links, and clicks through to a website. Traffic flowed from search engines to publishers. That model made Google the most powerful traffic source on the internet and made SEO a multi-billion-dollar industry.

AI search disrupts this at the root. When Google’s AI Overview or ChatGPT can synthesize an answer from dozens of sources and present it in a single paragraph, there’s no reason for the user to click anything at all. This is called a “zero-click search,” and it’s accelerating fast.

Studies tracking search behavior already showed zero-click searches crossing the majority of all queries before AI Overviews even launched widely. Now that AI-generated answers are the default for hundreds of millions of users, the zero-click problem has become the central challenge for anyone who depends on organic search traffic.

If your site answered “how to” questions, provided product comparisons, or explained definitions, the most common zero-click content categories, you’ve likely already felt this in your numbers.

What AI Search Is Actually Doing to Traffic

The impact isn’t uniform. Some sites are getting hammered. Others are thriving. The difference largely comes down to content type and intent.

Traffic that’s declining the fastest:

• Informational content with clear, singular answers (definitions, quick how-tos, basic explainers)

• Top-10 lists that AI can easily synthesize from multiple sources

• Thin affiliate pages that exist primarily to intercept commercial queries

• Content that answers “what is” or “how does” questions without depth or unique data

Traffic that’s holding. Or, even growing:

• Deep, experience-based content that AI can’t easily replicate (first-hand reviews, original research, personal expertise)

• Transactional pages where users want to complete an action, not just get information

• Brand-specific content where users are searching for you specifically

• Visual, video, and interactive content that doesn’t translate to a text answer

• Local and real-time information where AI tools still struggle with accuracy

The pattern is clear: AI search is commoditizing surface-level information. The web’s generic, recycled content, the filler that SEO built entire empires on, is being absorbed and synthesized away. What remains valuable is content with a distinct point of view, original data, or a direct transaction attached.

How Google’s AI Overviews Are Reshaping the SERP

Google occupies a uniquely awkward position in this shift. It needs to compete with ChatGPT and Perplexity by offering AI-generated answers, but its business model depends on users clicking ads which requires them to visit pages. The tension between these goals is visible in how AI Overviews have rolled out: they appear prominently for informational queries but are absent or reduced for commercial and transactional ones.

This is useful intelligence for content strategy. Google is essentially telling you, through its own product decisions, which query types still drive clicks and which ones it’s decided to absorb. Informational queries are increasingly AI territory. Transactional queries, where someone wants to buy, book, or sign up, remain click-driven, because completing a transaction requires leaving Google.

For domain investors and website builders, this confirms what smart practitioners already sensed: domains and sites oriented around commercial intent (buy, shop, compare, review, get a quote) will hold value longer than purely informational properties in the AI search era.

Answer Engine Optimization: The New SEO

As user behavior shifts from “search and click” to “ask and receive,” a new discipline is emerging alongside traditional SEO: Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO.

AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI systems cite, reference, or summarize it when answering user queries. The goal isn’t just to rank on page one, It’s to be the source that the AI pulls from when it composes its answer. Getting cited in an AI overview or a ChatGPT response doesn’t always drive a click, but it does build brand authority and keeps your content relevant in the new discovery layer.

Key AEO principles include:

• Structured, scannable content. AI systems process and extract information more reliably from well-organized pages. Clear headings, concise definitions, FAQ sections, and schema markup all help AI tools parse and attribute your content accurately.

• Demonstrating E-E-A-T. Google’s framework. Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness has taken on new importance in the AI era. AI systems favor sourcing content that signals genuine expertise: bylines, credentials, cited data, and first-hand experience all matter more than keyword density.

• Original data and proprietary insights. AI cannot synthesize what doesn’t exist elsewhere. If your content includes original research, survey data, case studies, or expert interviews, it becomes genuinely irreplaceable, something an AI has to reference rather than reproduce.

• Brand-building alongside content. As AI answers commoditize information, users who already know and trust your brand will seek you out directly. Direct traffic and branded search are growing in relative importance.

The Domain and URL Layer Still Matters

One question that often comes up in the domain investing world: do AI-driven changes reduce the value of keyword-rich domain names?

The honest answer is nuanced. Pure exact-match SEO value has become less reliable as AI Overviews intercept keyword traffic before it reaches your site. But strong domain names retain value for reasons that go beyond search rankings.

A memorable, keyword-relevant domain signals credibility and commercial intent to both human visitors and the AI systems evaluating trustworthiness. Domains with commercial verb prefixes, such as Buy, Shop and Get, continue to align with the transactional queries that AI search leaves to click-driven results. And domains that correspond to established categories (cameras, TVs, SSDs, streaming gear) remain anchors for category-focused content and affiliate properties.

The shift in search doesn’t eliminate domain value. It shifts it away from thin SEO plays and toward domains attached to genuine content authority, brand recognition, and transactional intent.

What You Should Do Now

The sites and publishers navigating this transition best aren’t the ones waiting for AI search to stabilize before making moves. They’re adapting now. Here’s a practical framework:

• Audit your traffic by content type. Separate your informational content from your transactional and brand content. Identify which pages are most vulnerable to AI answer substitution and which are protected.

• Shift investment toward depth and originality. Thin content is being eroded fastest. Double down on pieces that require real expertise, original research, or lived experience. The kind of content AI tools will cite rather than replace.

• Add schema markup and structured data. FAQ schema, HowTo schema, Article schema, and Product schema all help AI systems understand and properly attribute your content. This is foundational for AEO.

• Build direct audience relationships. Email lists, newsletters, and social followings are AI-proof distribution channels. If search traffic becomes less reliable, a direct connection to your audience ensures your content still reaches them.

• Monitor AI citation tracking. New tools are emerging to track when your content is cited in AI responses. Treat AI citations as a new form of referral traffic and brand signal.

• Optimize for transactional queries. Review your site’s keyword strategy with commercial intent as the filter. Queries where someone wants to buy or take action remain the most protected category in AI search.

The Bottom Line

AI search isn’t a passing trend that will normalize back to 2019 traffic patterns. It’s a durable structural shift in how information is discovered and consumed online. The websites that will thrive in this environment aren’t the ones optimized for quantity of traffic, but for quality of intent, audiences that come with a purpose, a transaction to complete, or a trusted relationship with your brand.

For those who’ve built sites and domain portfolios with genuine commercial focus, original content, and real audience intent, the AI search era isn’t the end of the opportunity. It’s a filter that’s removing the filler and rewarding the real.
